How to split or extract the right PDF pages

Understand page positions, split-range syntax and the difference between extracting, deleting and rearranging PDF pages.

Count PDF positions, not printed labels

A report may have an unnumbered cover, Roman-numeral introduction and numbered chapters. The tool uses the actual page positions from the PDF, starting at one. Check your viewer’s page position so a range refers to the sheets you intend.

Choose the operation that fits

Split PDF creates separate output documents for range groups. Extract Pages creates a new PDF from selected pages. Remove PDF Pages deletes the selected positions from a new copy. Reorder PDF Pages changes the sequence. These controls are related, but their page selections mean different things.

Enter split ranges

Upload the source to Split PDF and enter a range such as 1-3;4-6. The semicolon separates output groups: this example requests two files. Ranges must fit inside the source. Start with a small, easy-to-check selection if you are unsure about the numbering.

Example: separating a cover and two chapters

For a twelve-page PDF with a cover at position 1 and chapters at positions 2–6 and 7–12, enter 1;2-6;7-12. This requests three output groups containing one, five and six pages. The numbers describe physical PDF positions, including the cover. If a chapter’s printed label says page 1 but its PDF position is 2, use 2. Open every result and check the first and last sheet.

If the range is rejected

Check that every position is between 1 and the source’s page count, use a hyphen for a consecutive range and a semicolon between output groups. For example, 1-3;4-6 groups pages into two documents, while selecting pages for extraction is a different operation. Do not enter printed page labels, such as iii, in a numeric range field. If you only need one excerpt, Extract Pages may be easier than creating several split outputs.

Review every result

Open each output and confirm its first and last page. Check whether the recipient needs a cover or a page that explains the excerpt’s context. Keep the original so a mistaken selection does not require recreating missing material.

Handle confidential material deliberately

Removing whole pages is useful for shortening a document, but it does not prove that remaining metadata, attachments or page content contain no sensitive information. Cropping a visible area is not redaction. Inspect the material you plan to share and use a verified redaction workflow when necessary.
