Distinguish positions from printed numbers

PDF positions count sheets from one, including covers and introductions. Printed numbers are visible marks and may use a different sequence. Add Page Numbers places new visible overlays on selected pages; it does not rewrite PDF page-label metadata or erase numbers already present. Decide which sequence a reader should use before adding another set.

Choose the pages that need numbering

Upload one PDF and enter the physical positions that should receive the overlay. To leave a cover untouched, omit its position from the selection. Set the starting number for the selected sequence rather than assuming the tool knows which sheet is your first chapter. Keep the original so you can revise the selection after reviewing the result.

Set format and placement deliberately

Choose the starting number, format, position, margin and font controls shown by the tool. Supported format placeholders include {page} and {total}; the total follows the selected numbering sequence. Position the overlay where it does not cover signatures, footnotes or existing printed numbers. A layout that fits a large page may not fit every smaller sheet in a mixed-size document.

Example: numbering a merged report

Imagine a cover at physical position 1 followed by ten report pages at positions 2–11. Select 2-11, start at 1 and choose a bottom placement with enough space for the page’s existing content. Review that the cover remains unnumbered and the report begins with the intended visible number. These numbers illustrate a workflow; use the actual positions and layout of your own document.

Check the edges and the sequence

Open the downloaded result and inspect the first numbered sheet, a middle sheet and the final sheet. Confirm that overlays fit within the visible page area and do not hide required text. If a layout is rejected or clipped, review the font size and margin instead of repeatedly submitting unchanged settings. Check mixed page sizes and orientations individually.

Understand the limits of an overlay

An added number does not automatically repair a document’s bookmarks, table of contents or printed cross-references. Structural edits and overlays can affect signatures and accessibility, so review those features when they matter. If a source already has conflicting printed numbers, this tool does not promise to remove them or offer a general text editor.

Save the result before it expires

Download the reviewed result promptly. The hosted service accepts up to 100 MB per file and 500 pages per job, with one job at a time and shared usage quotas. Files are temporary, expire within at most 24 hours and can disappear earlier after a restart. Keep the original locally and download the finished copy promptly.
